Imitation Bacon - A Cooking Tip

By

How to Give this Soy Product A Fair Chance

Before you judge soy breakfast strips (aka "fake bacon") give it a fair chance by cooking it the same way you would cook real bacon - in a frying pan with some version of grease, whether that is margarine, butter, or a little vegetable oil.  Morningstar Farms makes a good "fake bacon", but heating it in the microwave will not do justice to this or other brands.

This product may be edible enough when heated in a microwave oven, but cooking it this way will lead you to believe that imitation bacon must be a flat, cardboard-y, food with a hint of bacon-ish flavor and little resemblance to the real thing. It can be tempting to just heat it in the microwave oven, but the results will be disappointing and not do justice to the product.

While frying anything may not be the healthiest way to cook, bacon is generally something that is cooked that way. If "healthiest" is the aim it may be wisest to stay away from all bacon and all fried foods. On the other hand, if you're looking for a vegetable-based product that tastes and feels like the real thing frying imitation bacon as you would real bacon will get the best results.

Trial and error will help you determine how long to cook the breakfast strips on each side.
